A jab for all teachers
Granville Whittle, Director-General of the DBE, briefed the media on all the details of the vaccination rollout. He said that there would be no age limit on who qualifies to be vaccinated and that the vaccination program would include the private school sector and also SGB appointed teachers and staff members. Whittle also noted that getting the vaccine is voluntary, and nobody will be forced to get vaccinated.
Many South Africans thought that the DBE's media briefing would be about closing schools earlier amid the 3rd wave. Minister Angie Motshega said that the DBE consulted with various stakeholders and decided that schools won't close earlier. She said out of the 25,000 schools in SA, COVID-19 infections only disrupted 100 schools recently, so there is no need to close schools earlier.
