Clarification regarding sale of fuel in containers
Following nationwide concerns about the recent announcement of new regulations prohibiting the resale of petrol and diesel in containers, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy decided to clarify the definition of the word 'container.' According to the statement by the department the word container refers to any object that is not verified by the South African National Standards (SANS) for the transport or keeping of petrol and diesel. The department acknowledged the distress and anxiety that might have been caused by the miscommunication. So what this means is that only SANS approved containers like a jerrycan may be used when buying fuel for generators or other purposes, and not empty plastic containers like cold drink and water bottles that are not SANS approved.
