On 27 December, Dr Zweli Mkhize, Minister of Health posted on Twitter that South Africa has breached the one million cumulative infections mark. This means, to date, 1 004 413 South Africans have contracted the virus. Out of the total of people infected, 26 735, unfortunately, succumbed to the virus. South Africa is in its second wave with infections growing exponentially by the day. Yesterday 9502 new cases were reported. The first time South Africa passed the 9000 mark was on 3 July 2020. In an interview with Morning Live, Dr Mkhize said that they had identified another 20 hotspots. When Dr Mkhize was asked about when the President will address the nation, he said that only the President would announce the date.
